Document Park (Document Koen)
Published by Seven Sha
1980, 1st Edtion (Softcover)
Condition: Used, very good.
Price £250
|
This is a very rare first edition, first printing of Kohei Yoshiyuki's critically acclaimed "Document Koen/Document Park". Yoshiyuki was a young commercial photographer in Tokyo in the early 1970s when he and a colleague walked through Chuo Park in Shinjuku one night. He noticed a couple on the ground, and then one man creeping toward them, followed by another. "I had my camera, but it was dark," he told the photographer Nobuyoshi Araki in a 1979 interview for a Japanese publication. Researching the technology in the era before infrared flash units, he found that Kodak made infrared flashbulbs. Mr. Yoshiyuki returned to the park, and to two others in Tokyo, through the '70s. He photographed heterosexual and homosexual couples engaged in sexual activity and the peeping toms who stalked them.
Martin Parr & Gerry Badger listed it in their book, "The Photobook: A History"

Hiromi Tsuchida: Hiroshima
Published by Quarto
1983, 1st Edition (Softcover)
Condition: Used, very good.
Price £215
|
In this three part document--Hiroshima Collection; Hiroshima 1945-1979; Hiroshima Monument--the photographer Hiromi Tsuchida presents an incredibly moving memorial to the atomic bomb blast of 1945. Not unlike Shomei Tomatsu, Tsuchida also photographed the victims' possessions left after the bomb. Along with reporter Ryuichiro Fukiage, Tsuchida also found and photographed the 186 school children and college students whose essay appeared in the 1951 book "Children of the Atomic Blast". For the final section of the book, he photographed the trees, buildings, and bridges that still remained after the blast as way to memorialize common things, long since buried in the blur of the bustling city. An incredibly scarce and important item!

Extremely rare limited edition of 500 copies
Condition: Used, very good. Small personal inscription on inlay.

Hessian bound carrying the blocked, embossed lettering "Cathy" on front and lower spine. 130 un-numbered pages. The book opens with four standard pages giving the background to the book. It then changes to die cut pages carrying John Carder Bush's thoughts about the photo on the following page. The die-cut pages offer a frame for the photos, which are revealed in full as the pages are turned. Housed in thin card slip case with doesn't match up to the quality of the book.
Here John Carder Bush's description of the book at the time of publishing: "Cathy gives a fascinating glimpse into the childhood of a young person who has grown into the remarkable and famous adult. As she poses for the photographs, often at times snatched after school, an image builds up of what this little girl's world was like. These innocent moments are linked with the thoughts and memories of her photographer-brother as he printed and prepared the pictures for publication. Cathy contains neither gossip nor scandal. It is a gentle, very personal view of childhood, and for those already familiar with Kate as a modern-day artist, it is a treasure-trove of echoes and evocations." |

Baader Meinhof - Pictures on the Run 67 - 77
Astrid Proll
Published by Scallo
1998 (Hardback)
Condition: Used, good.
Price £55
|
This volume shows pictures from ten crucial years of German post-war history - beginning with the death of the student Benno Ohnesorg on June 2nd, 1967, in Berlin, through to the murder of the President of the Employers' Association, Hanns-Martin Schleyer, on October 18th, 1977. The story of the Red Army Faction (R.A.F.) is also a story of the images that the group has staged, invoked and left behind: Ulrike Meinhof's warrant; the emblem with the red star and the kalashnikov; the arrest of Holger Meins; the high security wing in Stuttgart-Stammheim prison; the video tapes with the kidnapped Hanns-Martin Schleyer; the photograph of the dead Andreas Baader. "Six against sixty millions" - why is it that this war still occupies our minds, or the artistic creation, incorporated in the famous paintings by Gerhard Richter about the R.A.F., now at MOMA, New York? Repercussions can still be observed to this day. |
